Solar Panel Cleaning Drone Solutions

A photovoltaic array only earns money when sunlight reaches the cells, and every layer of dust, pollen, bird droppings or industrial grime between the sun and the panel is revenue lost. For site owners and O&M teams, the question is not whether to clean but how to do it across thousands of panels - many of them on rooftops or in rows that make manual work slow, water-hungry and risky. This page explains how drone-based solar panel cleaning works, what our system delivers, and how a typical operation is configured.

The Challenge: Cleaning at Scale Is the Real Cost

Three pain points come up in almost every utility-scale or commercial rooftop conversation:

  • Volume. A multi-megawatt site holds tens of thousands of panels; manual crews measure progress in panels per hour while soiling does not wait.

  • Water and logistics. Traditional washing consumes large volumes of water and needs support vehicles, scaffolding or lift equipment on rooftops.

  • Risk. Workers on ladders and roofs at height is the incident category every O&M manager wants out of the contract.

Drone cleaning attacks all three: the aircraft carries the washing system to the panel, the crew stays on the ground, and per-day coverage scales with the number of sorties rather than the number of workers on the roof.

Our Solution: The PV Cleaning Module for DJI FC100 & T100

WillFly Drone is a direct drone payload manufacturer in Suzhou and a DJI partner since 2016. For photovoltaic work we build a dedicated solar panel cleaning payload - a lightweight spray module designed around two DJI platforms:

  • Wide compatibility. Integrates with the DJI FC100 and DJI T100 through DJI PSDK communication.

  • Integrated water system. A 75L onboard water tank with dual pumps at 10-15 MPa keeps spray pressure stable through long cleaning passes.

  • Lightweight airframe budget. The module weighs under 8 kg excluding the tank, preserving useful flight time on the platform.

We supply the payload and integration; the aircraft comes through DJI's enterprise channel. Configuration for a specific site - nozzle setup, flow parameters, tank strategy - is confirmed at quotation.

How a Drone Solar Cleaning Pass Works

  1. Site survey. The team maps panel rows, access points and water refill spots, then sets the cleaning route.

  2. Quick-mount. The module attaches through a 1/4 quick-release mount - swap between payload configurations in minutes, no tools marathon.

  3. Spray configuration. Spray swing angle is set electrically from 5° to 65° and water flow from 5 to 20 L/min, matched to how heavily the panels are soiled.

  4. Cleaning passes. Three nozzles with 0° / 15° / 25° / 40° angle options cover the panel surface row by row; the operator adjusts parameters live from the ground.

  5. Refill and repeat. The 75L tank returns to the refill point between passes, keeping the duty cycle moving across the array.

What the Hardware Actually Delivers

Specifications from our module's published data sheet:

  • 75L integrated water tank - fewer refill cycles per hectare cleaned.

  • Dual pumps, 10-15 MPa, 2500 W - stable spray pressure for stubborn soiling.

  • Electrically adjustable spray - 5°-65° swing angle and 5-20 L/min flow, tuned per row without swapping hardware.

  • Four nozzle angle options (0° / 15° / 25° / 40°) across three nozzles for different panel tilts and grime types.

  • PSDK integration and 1/4 quick-release mounting - clean handover between the aircraft and the cleaning system.

Every unit ships with MOQ of one set, 15-30 days lead time and a 12-month warranty, backed by OEM/ODM manufacturing for fleets that need customized variants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which drones can carry the solar cleaning module?

The module is built for the DJI FC100 and DJI T100 platforms and communicates through DJI PSDK. If you operate a different platform, send us the model and we will assess integration feasibility.

How long can it clean before refilling?

The 75L tank supports a continuous cleaning pass whose length depends on the flow setting - at 5 L/min the runtime is roughly triple that of the 20 L/min heavy-soiling setting. Operators plan routes around on-site refill points.

Can spray settings change between rows?

Yes - swing angle (5°-65°), flow rate (5-20 L/min) and nozzle angle options are all adjusted electrically from the ground, so a lightly dusty section and a bird-dropping hotspot can be handled in the same flight session.

What is the ordering process?

MOQ is one set, lead time is 15-30 days after order confirmation, and every unit carries a 12-month warranty. Customization requirements are confirmed at quotation with our OEM/ODM team.
